Sensitive Optic Nerves

The optic nerve is the link between the eye and the brain. Its function is to move electrical impulses gathered in the tissue at the back of the eye (the retina) to the brain’s vision center so the impulses can be interpreted as images.

Damage to the optic nerve can lead to vision loss, blindness or vision distortion

Approximately 1.2 million nerve fibers make up the optic nerve. These fibers are located near the center of the retina. They form what is known as an optic nerve head as they leave the retina and enter the front of the optic nerve. The front of the optic nerve head has a small depression called the “cup.” Although there are variations on the size of the cup, it is typically smaller than the optic nerve’s diameter. If this cup area begins to enlarge, this might signify damage to the optic nerve, often caused by glaucoma.
